The winners of the recent Party Poker Pokerfest Main Event enjoyed the benefit of a massive $54,400 overlay in the $1 million guaranteed Party Poker tournament.
Despite smaller overlays in two earlier events – #22 ($100.00 buy-in 6-Max Deepstack) and #23 ($200.00 buy-in NL Hold´em) – a net loss in the feature tournament of the 47 event series had hardly been anticipated following six weeks of qualifying satellites and plenty of pre-event promotion. However, as all online poker players know, things do not always go as planned.
Less Than 1,600 Players Take Part
Despite the volume of online poker qualifiers to the Main Event, and the attention these had attracted, only 1,576 players took their seats in the $640.00 buy-in event. The overlay represented a 5.75% bonus to the 200 players who cashed in the event and a big hit to Party Poker who, in the series as a whole, paid out more than $15,000 in tournaments which had buy-ins with Party Poker Points and a further $78,900 in tournament overlays.
Double Good News for Koppiesop
The overlay was excellent news for “Koppiesop”, who won the Pokerfest Main Event after failing to qualify through the satellites in the weeks leading up to the feature tournament. He and “Boomerfancy” (who also final tabled in Event #32) made a heads-up deal which saw them collect $165,000 and $145,000 respectively – more than $8,000 above what they would have won had there been no guarantee in place. Also, it has to be acknowledged that the smaller than anticipated level of competition made their paths to the heads-up of the final table all that much easier!
